About Diabetic Child Society
The prevalence of Diabetes is increasing in children and adolescents at a very rapid pace in India and this calls for an urgent need to mobilize resources in order to handle the younger diabetic population. Diabetes in Children is mostly Type 1 Diabetes and the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes is mainly with Insulin which needs to be injected 3-4 times daily. Management of diabetes in children is a team effort. The child with diabetes can be effectively managed to lead a normal healthy life with the support of the family, society, schools and peer groups. A good control of blood glucose is essential to prevent complications of diabetes in the young. Good control cannot be achieved by simply writing a prescription of insulin, these children need much more. The Diabetic child society was created keeping this in mind, to provide a support system for T1DM. Education is a major part of treatment of any chronic illness, more so in Type 1 diabetes because it presents at such a young age. Inculcating goals and healthy lifestyles to these kids at a young age allows them to live their best life without any devastating complication that may occur due to improper treatment. DCS strives to make each child understand the disease process and tries to make sure that they follow healthy lifestyles. In addition to much needed education, each child is provided with the necessities they require for proper management. DCS provides quarterly HbA1c testing which is the best way to monitor glycemic control. Glucometers, testing strips, lancets, syringes, pen needles, insulin and much more are provided to our children free of cost. Ocular issues are some of the most common complications that can arise in type 1 diabetics, keeping this in mind each child undergoes regular retinal check-up at our camps with the help of volunteers from Vishaka Eye Hospital. Diet counselling and encouragement of physical activity is also regularly done. Diabetic Chid Society makes a strong effort to help these children access all the required support systems under one roof, enabling them to manage their diabetes well.
